Boating from Punta Gorda Isles starts with a slow ride down your own canal and ends wherever Charlotte Harbor takes you: lunch at Fishermen's Village, fuel at Burnt Store Marina, tarpon off Boca Grande Pass, a quiet anchorage in Gasparilla Sound, or the docks at Cabbage Key. This guide covers the boat owner's week. It sets out which way out suits which trip, how long each run takes at three speeds, the speed and manatee rules, where to launch and fuel, the 2027 waterway calendar and the dock and lift rules. It is part of our Charlotte County area guide, sits under our overview of living in Punta Gorda, and goes deeper on the boating life our Punta Gorda Isles community guide describes.

Key facts about boating in Punta Gorda Isles

Boating in Punta Gorda Isles comes down to eight working facts: two main ways south and west, a slow canal leg on every trip, runs of about 16 to 18 nautical miles to Boca Grande Pass, public ramps at Ponce de Leon Park and Laishley Park, a 2027 county dredge, firm dock limits and water on nearly every home lot.

Data updated: November 2026 (NOAA, USGS, City of Punta Gorda, Charlotte County and Property Appraiser records, retrieved 3 Nov 2026)

  • Two measured starting points. The Ponce de Leon area on the west harbor front and Buckley's Pass on the south, which opens into Alligator Creek. Their starting points sit 2.6 nautical miles apart.
  • Every canal is slow speed. City ordinance makes every canal in the Punta Gorda Isles canal district a slow speed minimum wake zone.
  • Boca Grande Pass in under an hour at 20 knots. Our straight-leg measurement gives 16.1 nautical miles from the Alligator Creek mouth and 18.0 from the Ponce de Leon area, about 48 and 54 minutes once you are in open water.
  • Fishermen's Village is the short hop. About 1.5 nautical miles from the Ponce de Leon area, and its marina takes boats to 60 feet and a 7-foot draft.
  • Two free City ramps. Ponce de Leon Park has one paved ramp, and Laishley Park Marina has two lanes; the state boating guide lists no launch fee at either.
  • Laishley is back, partly. The municipal marina reopened with 61 operational slips by September 2, 2026.
  • Alligator Creek gets dredged in 2027. Charlotte County forecasts construction from July 3 to December 3, 2027.
  • Water on almost every home lot. The county roll flags 4,505 of the 4,726 single-family parcels in the Punta Gorda Isles plats as waterfront, 95.3 percent.

Why McGreevy and Comisar built this boating guide

Buyers looking at Punta Gorda Isles ask how long it takes to get somewhere by boat, and the answers online are guesses with no starting point. McGreevy and Comisar measured every run on this page from positions a federal agency publishes and then checked each rule against the City and county record.

We lead Domain Realty Group, the #1 team in Southwest Florida since 2012, and we have been Top 1% Real Estate Agents Nationally Since 2008, with over $2.5 Billion in Real Estate sold as a team. Reading the primary record before advising anyone is the habit that standing was built on, and it is the only thing that produces a page like this one.

So we went to the records. We tracked 12 routes from two published starting points to six destinations, timed each at three speeds, and we tracked every single-family parcel in the Punta Gorda Isles plats through the county roll. Where a public source is silent, as it is on canal leg distances, we say so instead of guessing. If you are choosing an agent for a canal home as well as a route, our guide to the best real estate agents in Punta Gorda explains how we work this market. To talk through a specific canal home, call Jesse direct at (239) 898-6072.

Which way out of Punta Gorda Isles suits which boat trip?

From Punta Gorda Isles, Buckley's Pass and Alligator Creek give the shorter open-water run to Burnt Store Marina, Boca Grande Pass, Gasparilla Sound and Cabbage Key, by about 1.8 to 2.3 nautical miles. The Ponce de Leon area is 2.6 nautical miles closer to Fishermen's Village. Your own canal leg decides the rest.

Method: great-circle distance on a mean Earth radius of 3,440.065 nautical miles, summed over each leg by a script of our own. Cape Haze Shoal Light 6 (26°45'36"N 82°06'38"W) and Port Boca Grande Light (26°43'02"N 82°15'39"W) are Coast Pilot positions; the Burnt Store Marina point is projected from the Coast Pilot's 2.6 miles on 088 degrees from Light 6; the other points are USGS Geographic Names positions. Time is distance divided by speed, with nothing added for the canal leg, current or weather.

The two starting points

The Buckley's Pass column starts at the mouth of Alligator Creek as the national names register records it, which is where a boat from the pass reaches the harbor. The Ponce de Leon column has a harder problem: no government record publishes a position for Ponce de Leon Inlet. We start that column at the nearest point a federal agency does publish on the west harbor front, the West Marion Avenue span the bridge inventory places 0.3 miles east of Colony Point. Read that column as the Ponce de Leon area, not the inlet mouth to the yard.

Why these are floors, not promises

A straight leg between two published points is the shortest a run can be. The marked channel bends around shoals and points, the Fishermen's Village leg from the creek mouth has to round the Punta Gorda Isles peninsula, and the Cabbage Key leg has to follow the marked Intracoastal Waterway channel. Treat every figure as a minimum, then add your canal time.

Your canal leg decides the rest

The two starting points sit only 2.6 nautical miles apart, so the open-water savings above are small next to the slow-speed miles between a given dock and the nearest exit. A lot near Buckley's Pass that has to idle the length of the system to reach Ponce de Leon will rarely go that way, and the reverse holds on the west side. Our Bird Section guide covers the streets Buckley's Pass was cut to serve, and our guide to the Punta Gorda Isles sections shows where each plat sits in the system.

How long is the slow-speed canal leg in Punta Gorda Isles?

No public source measures the canal leg from a Punta Gorda Isles dock to an exit, and every canal in the district is slow speed minimum wake. At 5 knots each nautical mile of canal takes 12 minutes; at 4 knots, 15. Measure your own leg on a chart, multiply, and add it to the run.

Data updated: November 2026 (City of Punta Gorda Code, Chapter 6, read 10 Oct 2026; our arithmetic, 3 Nov 2026)

Canal speed (your choice inside the slow speed rule)Minutes per nautical mileMinutes per statute mile
4 knots1513
5 knots1210
6 knots109

Slow speed minimum wake is a condition, not a number: the boat must be fully off plane, settled in the water and making no wake that matters. The knot figures above are arithmetic for planning, not a legal limit, and many boats will be slower than 6 knots and still be throwing a wake.

What residents said when Buckley's Pass opened

Before April 2020, boats on the southern canals idled north and west to reach Ponce de Leon. In 2020 reporting, Bird Section boaters said the pass cut their run to the harbor from about an hour and 15 minutes to about 15 minutes, and one account said some sailboats had needed about an hour and a half to reach Ponce Park. Those are residents' accounts, not measurements, and they show why the canal leg matters more than the open-water miles.

How to time your own canal

Trace the route from the seawall to the nearest exit on a current electronic chart or a recent aerial, measure it, and multiply by the minutes per mile for the speed your boat holds without a wake. Then run it once with a stopwatch on a calm morning. That one timed run is worth more than any listing that promises "minutes to the harbor." To have us work out the route and canal time for a specific address, call Jesse direct at (239) 898-6072.

What are the speed rules and manatee zones around Punta Gorda Isles?

Every Punta Gorda Isles canal is a City slow speed minimum wake zone. On Alligator Creek the county slow zone begins near Marker 21, just downstream of Buckley's Pass. Florida's manatee zones for the area sit on the Peace River from US 41 toward I-75, away from the canals and the harbor off Punta Gorda Isles.

Data updated: November 2026 (Florida Administrative Code 68C-22.015, FWC, Charlotte County Manatee Protection Plan, retrieved 3 Nov 2026)

Inside the canals

City ordinance covers all canals in the Punta Gorda Isles and Burnt Store Isles canal maintenance districts, listed access channels, and City shorelines out to the 6-foot contour. It runs the full length of every canal, so the slow leg begins at your own seawall and ends at the exit.

On Alligator Creek

The county moved the Alligator Creek slow speed minimum wake zone on December 8, 2020 so that it now starts near Marker 21, just downstream of Buckley's Pass. County advisory minutes in 2023 described the water near Marker 20 as a busy fishing spot, so expect anchored boats there on good mornings.

On the Peace River and the harbor

State rule 68C-22.015, in effect since July 23, 2006, sets the Charlotte County manatee zones. Near Punta Gorda they run on the Peace River from the US 41 bridges toward I-75, and the federal Peace River Manatee Refuge covers waters north and east of US 41. The FWC boating guide warns that it shows only some of the regulatory zones in the Charlotte Harbor area, so carry a current zone map or app on the boat rather than trusting memory.

Wildlife and water quality

Charlotte Harbor sits inside the 221,459-acre critical habitat unit for the smalltooth sawfish, and manatees and resident dolphins use the harbor. Red tide comes and goes: on FWC's October 30, 2026 report it was not observed anywhere in Southwest Florida. For dated readings, impaired-water listings and the rules on trimming mangroves, see our guide to Punta Gorda Isles water quality and wildlife.

Where do Punta Gorda Isles boaters launch, fuel and tie up?

Punta Gorda Isles boaters launch at two free City ramps, Ponce de Leon Park and Laishley Park Marina. Laishley reopened with 61 operational slips by September 2, 2026. Fishermen's Village takes boats to 60 feet and a 7-foot draft, and Safe Harbor Burnt Store, across the harbor, runs a daily fuel dock.

Ponce de Leon Park

Ponce de Leon Park is the City's own front door to the canal system: 16 acres on the harbor with a mangrove boardwalk, a small beach, a pier and the ramp. A $3.625 million improvement plan for restrooms, a pavilion and boat and trailer parking has $2.53 million without identified funding and waits on the wildlife center's move. Our Charlotte County parks guide covers the park on land.

Laishley Park Municipal Marina

Laishley is the City's marina on the downtown waterfront. It reopened in part with 61 operational slips, restrooms, the ramp and the Day Room under a temporary state use agreement, as reported on September 2, 2026. Its state lease requires 90 percent of slips to stay open to recreational boaters first come, first served, and annual slips run $16.00 per foot per month with a $100 liveaboard fee. Its dredging and rebuild lines are covered in the calendar below.

Fishermen's Village

Fishermen's Village is the dock-and-dine stop closest to the west side of Punta Gorda Isles. The Harbor Master's page lists more than one hundred slips for vessels up to 60 feet and a 7-foot draft. The center sold on July 22, 2026 for $43 million, and its buyers named restoring the marina damaged in Milton as a first goal, a multi-year job. Call before you plan to tie up. For the shops and events ashore, see our list of things to do in Punta Gorda, and for waterfront tables our Charlotte County restaurant guide.

Fuel on the water

Safe Harbor Burnt Store publishes a fuel dock open every day from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with marine diesel and gas. Fishermen's Village has had a fuel dock, but its marina page shows no current status, so confirm with the Harbor Master before a run that depends on it. Keep a reserve for the slow canal leg home.

Clubs and the boat parade

The Punta Gorda Sailing Club races on Sundays and Wednesdays and holds a monthly Third Thursday anchor-out off Gilchrist Park. The Punta Gorda Boaters Alliance runs a Dock Match program for owners moved off their docks by seawall work. The lighted boat parade runs about four miles through the canals with no bridges on its route; the 2026 parade is December 19 at 6 p.m.

Where can you go by boat from Punta Gorda Isles?

From Punta Gorda Isles the regular trips are Fishermen's Village and downtown, the open harbor, Burnt Store Marina, Boca Grande Pass for tarpon and the Gulf, Gasparilla Sound, and Cabbage Key on the Intracoastal Waterway. Each has its own depth, current or rule to plan around, set out below from the Coast Pilot and state records.

Data updated: November 2026 (NOAA Coast Pilot 5, Chapters 4 and 12, FWC, FDEP, retrieved 3 Nov 2026)

Boca Grande Pass

Boca Grande Pass is the harbor's door to the Gulf and its best-known tarpon water, with peak season in spring and early summer. The Coast Pilot gives the entrance current as 2.2 knots on average, with ebbs of 3 to 4 knots, so a slow boat should time the tide. Tarpon are catch and release. In the pass, hanging weights below the hook are banned all year, and from April through June each vessel may fish no more than three lines and no breakaway gear.

Gasparilla Sound

Gasparilla Sound lies behind Gasparilla Island, north of Boca Grande, inside the Gasparilla Sound-Charlotte Harbor Aquatic Preserve. The state describes preserve waters as generally over 6 feet deep except near the shore and in Gasparilla Sound itself, which is the warning a deeper boat needs. Stay in the marked channel and read a current chart before poking into the flats.

Cabbage Key

Cabbage Key sits on the Intracoastal Waterway in Pine Island Sound, about 5 miles south of Boca Grande by the island's own description. The Coast Pilot places a privately marked channel at Mile 21.5 leading to piers and a restaurant, with piers that take boats up to 75 feet. The island's own page puts it directly across from marker 60.

Burnt Store Marina

Burnt Store Marina sits on the east side of the lower harbor, 2.6 miles on a bearing of 088 degrees from Cape Haze Shoal Light 6 by the Coast Pilot's description. The operator lists fuel, service and a yard, and the Coast Pilot adds a launching ramp and wet and dry storage. The marked channel's reported depth of 5.5 feet is the number to check against your draft.

The Peace River upstream

Upriver from Punta Gorda, the twin US 41 bridges and the I-75 bridges are fixed, and the state manatee zones begin above US 41. Small outboards can reach Hull, about 15 miles above the river entrance, but the channel above the highway bridges is shallow and needs local knowledge.

What changes on the water near Punta Gorda Isles in 2027?

The biggest 2027 boating change near Punta Gorda Isles is Charlotte County's Alligator Creek maintenance dredge, budgeted at $2,237,048 with construction forecast from July 3 to December 3, 2027. The City also has a $245,000 grant to dredge the Boat Club Inlet in fiscal 2027, while Laishley Marina's $715,000 dredging line remains unfunded.

Alligator Creek in detail

An April 2025 survey found 9,467 cubic yards of material in the main Alligator Creek channel. The county's October 15, 2026 update says the Army Corps re-certified the permit and that the county is holding the bid to combine it with Pirate Harbor for cost. Until a new survey is published, the last Coast Pilot depth for the creek channel is the 6 feet reported in 1991, so a deeper boat leaving by Buckley's Pass should sound the creek near low water.

Inside the canal district

The City canal district dredges inlets and channels on its own program and lets owners hire its designated contractor for dockside dredging at their own cost. That work is paid for by the annual assessment on every district lot; our guide to the Punta Gorda Isles canal assessment covers the fiscal 2027 rate and where it goes.

Downtown waterfront

On August 26, 2026 Council approved a $4 million private day-dock marina of about 62 to 63 slips at 300 West Retta Esplanade, east of Fishermen's Village. Its start date is not confirmed, and the permit conditions bar construction before a state submerged land lease is in place.

What dock and lift rules apply to a Punta Gorda Isles boat owner?

Punta Gorda Isles dock rules allow a freestanding dock up to 10 feet out by right and cap any structure at 25 feet from the seawall, or 20 feet in named parts of Pompano, Bass and Tarpon inlets. Nothing may enter the navigable channel or touch the seawall, and lift canopies are banned.

Data updated: November 2026 (City of Punta Gorda Code, Chapter 6, and Seawall, Dock and Boat-Lift permit packet; FDEP dock guidance, retrieved 3 Nov 2026)

The dock box

On a single-family lot with less than 85 feet of seawall, the by-right package is a freestanding concrete dock up to 10 feet waterward plus one lift or up to three mooring piles. At 85 feet or more, an owner may have two lifts, kept apart and inside the 45-degree Structure Limitation Lines drawn from each property corner. The navigable channel runs 25 feet each side of the canal centerline, 30 feet in Bass, Pompano and Tarpon inlets and Buckley's Pass, and 20 feet in Snook Inlet. On an 80-foot canal that leaves about 15 feet each side.

Lifts

Lift covers and canopies are prohibited in City canals, even though state rules elsewhere allow small lift roofs and count them toward the state's dock area exemption. Floating lifts are limited to motorized vessels of 19 feet or less, no larger than 17 by 20 feet. Chapter 6 sets no lift weight limit, so size the lift to the boat and the engineer's plan.

Permits and the seawall

The City permit for a single-family dock, lift or seawall job is $100 plus $25 for electrical, and anything beyond the by-right box needs a Canal Construction Special Permit with a $450 fee and a hearing before the canal advisory committee. Build the dock 15 inches below the top of the seawall cap, or the City will cut it down at the owner's expense during wall replacement. Inside the canal district the City owns and replaces the walls, while the owner owns and maintains the dock, lift and davits; Sections 24 and 27 and some blocks of Sections 5, 7, 12 and 14 sit outside the district. Our guide to Punta Gorda Isles seawalls explains the replacement schedule.

State and federal layers

The state exempts single-family docks of up to 1,000 square feet over water in canals outside Outstanding Florida Waters, and online self-certification is free. The county manatee plan exempts single-family docks with four or fewer slips from its boat facility siting review. The City permit is still required either way.

What about bridges and mast height?

Bridges matter for a mast, a tower or a flybridge, not for most day boating in Punta Gorda Isles. The City says most of the system has no fixed bridges, and the federal bridge inventory lists three West Marion Avenue spans with no recorded clearance. Our sailboat water guide covers the span list and the tide math.

If you run a sailboat or a tall center console, read our guide to Punta Gorda Isles sailboat water before you choose a canal. It lists the federal bridge records, explains how to measure a span against your air draft at a known tide, and shows why no section or street carries a label on our pages.

How much of Punta Gorda Isles sits on the water?

Nearly all of it. The county roll flags 4,505 of the 4,726 single-family parcels in the Punta Gorda Isles plats as waterfront, 95.3 percent, and 327 of the 338 qualified single-family sales in the 12 months to September 9, 2026 were waterfront-flagged, 96.7 percent.

Data updated: November 2026 (Charlotte County Property Appraiser roll and sales files dated 1 Nov 2026, our count, retrieved 3 Nov 2026)

County roll measure, Punta Gorda Isles platsCountWaterfront-flagged
Single-family parcels (land use 01)4,7264,505 (95.3%)
Vacant parcels (land use 00)434337 (77.6%)

Qualified single-family sales, 36 months to Sept 9, 2026793758 (95.6%)

Qualified sales are deed sale codes 01 and 02, improved, over $1,000. A waterfront flag says a lot touches water; it does not say what kind of water, how deep it is, or which exit serves it.

What that means for a buyer

When nearly every home is on the water, the water is not the differentiator; the route, the dock and the canal leg are. If you are shortlisting canal homes, the Domain Realty Group page for Punta Gorda Isles waterfront homes for sale gathers the current searches, and each one deserves a timed canal run before you write an offer. See how we help buyers in Punta Gorda Isles or how we represent buyers in Southwest Florida, or call Marc at (239) 287-5873.

What that means for a seller

A seller's best boating evidence is specific: the exit the canal uses, a timed run to open water, the dock and lift permits, and the seawall status. Put it in writing before you list. Get a Punta Gorda Isles home valuation, read how we sell homes in Punta Gorda Isles, or call Jesse direct at (239) 898-6072.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get from Punta Gorda Isles to the Gulf by boat?

Idle down your canal to the nearest exit, either the Ponce de Leon area on the west or Buckley's Pass into Alligator Creek on the south, then run southwest down Charlotte Harbor past Cape Haze Shoal Light 6 to Boca Grande Pass. Our straight-leg measurement puts the pass 16.1 to 18.0 nautical miles from those starting points, before the canal leg.

How long does it take to boat from Punta Gorda Isles to Boca Grande?

At 20 knots, about 48 minutes from the Alligator Creek mouth and 54 minutes from the Ponce de Leon area to Port Boca Grande Light, on our straight-leg measurement. At 30 knots those runs take 32 and 36 minutes; at 6 knots, 2 hours 41 minutes and 3 hours. Add your slow-speed canal time, current and weather.

Can you boat from Punta Gorda Isles to Cabbage Key?

Yes. Cabbage Key is on the Intracoastal Waterway south of Boca Grande, and the Coast Pilot places a privately marked channel at Mile 21.5 leading to piers that take boats up to 75 feet. Our measurement gives 16.5 nautical miles from the Alligator Creek mouth by way of Cape Haze Shoal Light 6, about 49 minutes at 20 knots.

What is Buckley's Pass?

Buckley's Pass is a dredged channel about 1,446 feet long and 60 feet wide that opened to boats on April 3, 2020. It joins the southern Punta Gorda Isles canals to Alligator Creek about a mile above Charlotte Harbor. It has no lock or gate, and City Code keeps a 30-foot navigable channel each side of its centerline. The City's only boat lock is at Burnt Store Isles, a separate district, where widening began in January 2025.

Is there a speed limit in Punta Gorda Isles canals?

Every canal in the Punta Gorda Isles canal district is a slow speed minimum wake zone under City ordinance. That means fully off plane, settled in the water and making no meaningful wake, rather than a posted number of miles per hour. On Alligator Creek the county slow zone starts near Marker 21, just downstream of Buckley's Pass.

Are there manatee zones in Punta Gorda Isles?

The canals are City slow speed zones rather than state manatee zones. Florida's Charlotte County manatee rule, 68C-22.015, places zones on the Peace River from US 41 toward I-75, and the federal Peace River Manatee Refuge covers waters north and east of US 41. Manatees still use the harbor and canals, so slow down and watch.

Where is the boat ramp for Punta Gorda Isles?

The City ramp at Ponce de Leon Park, 3400 Ponce de Leon Parkway, is the gateway to the canal system, with one paved lane, docks, restrooms and trailer parking. The other City ramp is at Laishley Park Marina, 120 Laishley Court, with two lanes. The state boating guide lists no launch fee at either.

Is Laishley Park Marina open?

Partly. Laishley Park Municipal Marina reopened with 61 operational slips, restrooms, the ramp and the Day Room by September 2, 2026, under a temporary state use agreement. The permanent rebuild has no date, and its $715,000 dredging and $2,785,000 rebuilding lines are unfunded in the City's capital plan.

When will Alligator Creek be dredged?

Charlotte County forecasts construction from July 3 to December 3, 2027, after design development ends on July 3, 2027. The budget is $2,237,048, paid by the Alligator Creek Waterway MSBU and FEMA claims for Ian and Milton. The Army Corps re-certified the permit, and the county plans to bid the job with Pirate Harbor.

How far can my dock go into a Punta Gorda Isles canal?

A freestanding dock may reach 10 feet from the seawall by right, and no structure may go past 25 feet, or 20 feet in named parts of Pompano, Bass and Tarpon inlets. Nothing may enter the navigable channel, normally 25 feet each side of the centerline, so on an 80-foot canal only about 15 feet remain.

Does every Punta Gorda Isles canal home have Gulf access?

Almost every home lot touches water: the county roll flags 95.3 percent of single-family parcels as waterfront. Whether a given canal suits your boat is a separate question about the route, the depth on the way out and any bridge on it. Trace and time the route from the dock before you buy.

Do I need a fishing license on my boat in Charlotte Harbor?

Yes, unless you are exempt. A Florida resident annual saltwater license costs $17.00, and snook need a $10 permit as well. The free resident shoreline license covers fishing from land or a dock attached to it, not from a boat. City rules also bar commercial fishing in the canals.

McGreevy and Comisar are Jesse McGreevy and Marc Comisar, leading Domain Realty Group in Southwest Florida. We have been selling this market since 2004 and have been Top 1% Real Estate Agents Nationally Since 2008. This page exists because buyers kept asking how long a boat trip from a canal home really takes and kept getting answers with no starting point. So we measured from published positions, and we bring the same parcel-level rigor to a question about boat trips that we bring to pricing a waterfront listing.

What it reflects is twenty years of reading the primary record on a client's behalf, which is the same habit that produced every count above.
