FGCU Launches Major Campus Upgrades to Enhance Student Life

SUSAN KOSCHALK September 30, 2025

A Modernized Heart of Campus Life at FGCU

Inside the Cohen Student Union, the second phase of a major remodeling project has officially begun. The renovations aim to make the space more functional, comfortable, and visually appealing for students and the campus community.

Key upgrades include:

  • Enclosing the outdoor atrium to create more usable indoor space.
  • Relocating the information booth to a more central and accessible location.
  • Constructing new seating areas, including an elevated space overlooking the first floor.
  • Adding three new conference-style rooms on the second floor to better support student organizations and events.

Outside, the lawn near Einstein Bros. Bagels is temporarily closed to accommodate the construction. A newly built sidewalk reroutes pedestrian traffic, ensuring students and staff can move safely around the site during the upgrades.

FGCU President Aysegul Timur emphasized the significance of these changes:

“The renovation of the Cohen Student Union is all about improving the student experience. It reflects FGCU’s dedication to meeting the changing needs of our campus community while ensuring the student union continues to serve as the heart of student life at FGCU.”

Academic Building 10: A New Chapter for Health & Human Services

Meanwhile, just across campus, site preparation is underway for Academic Building 10—a 158,435-square-foot facility that will expand Marieb College of Health & Human Services.

The building will feature:

  • Cutting-edge instructional technology designed to support innovative teaching methods.
  • State-of-the-art research spaces that enhance the university’s academic and clinical capabilities.
  • Funding support including a $22 million gift from the Elaine Nicpon Marieb Charitable Foundation, underscoring the university’s strong partnerships with the community.

A Long-Term Vision for Innovation and Student Success

These developments are part of FGCU’s long-term strategic plan to create dynamic, student-focused spaces and foster innovation across campus. By reimagining student hubs like the Cohen Student Union and expanding academic facilities, FGCU is positioning itself to better serve students, faculty, staff, and the wider community for years to come.
