RSW Airport Expansion Continues: Concourse E and Terminal Improvements Surpass $1 Billion

SUSAN KOSCHALK November 14, 2025

The expansion of Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) is well underway, marking one of the most significant infrastructure investments in the region’s history. With Concourse E currently under construction and phased improvements advancing steadily, the project is designed to elevate passenger experience, increase capacity, and support the long-term growth of Southwest Florida.

“Southwest Florida International Airport is the front door to our community and supports travel, business and tourism in our region,” said Steven C. Hennigan, C.M., A.C.E., executive director and CEO of the Lee County Port Authority. His statement reflects the critical importance of RSW as a gateway for both residents and visitors.

A Billion-Dollar Investment in Regional Growth

RSW’s expansion has entered Phase 2 of its terminal redevelopment. This phase features a sweeping 513,000-square-foot addition anchored by the much-anticipated Concourse E, which includes:

  • 14 new gates
  • Nine consolidated TSA security checkpoints
  • Expanded baggage claim areas
  • Significant additional passenger space and amenity areas

Once complete, these improvements will allow the airport to accommodate tens of thousands of additional travelers each week, supporting the region’s booming population and tourism growth.

The entire multi-phase project—estimated at $1.1 billion—broke ground in spring 2025. Construction is expected to span two to four years, with upgrades strategically phased to minimize disruption.

Key Enhancements Travelers Can Expect

The RSW expansion focuses on improving efficiency, comfort, and flow throughout the terminal. Core upgrades include:

  • A brand-new Concourse E with modern gate areas and passenger amenities
  • A single, centralized TSA checkpoint designed to streamline screening operations
  • Additional shops, restaurants, and concessions to enhance the travel experience
  • Improved mechanical systems, including upgraded cooling capacity and energy-efficient infrastructure

B&I Plays a Major Role in Advancing RSW’s Future

B&I has been selected to support significant components of the expansion across both Phase 1 and Phase 2.

Phase 2 B&I Scope Includes:

  • Mechanical and plumbing systems throughout the new concourse
  • Seven mechanical rooms
  • Major infrastructure upgrades including new cooling towers, chillers, and pumps

Phase 1 B&I Scope Included:

  • Mechanical and plumbing throughout the remodeled and expanded spaces
  • Eight mechanical rooms, a mix of newly built and renovated
  • Work spanning 164,000 square feet of remodeled space and 117,000 square feet of new walkways and concessions

“Our involvement in the RSW Expansion reflects B&I’s dedication to supporting major projects across Florida. We’re delivering high-quality mechanical and plumbing systems that help the airport meet its growth and operational goals,” said Canyon Tennant, project engineer.

Funding and Regional Impact

The RSW expansion is being funded through a combination of:

  • Airport revenue bonds
  • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants
  • Passenger Facility Charges
  • Florida Department of Transportation state grants

Currently serving approximately 10 million travelers each year, Southwest Florida International Airport is poised to accommodate hundreds of thousands more once the expansion is complete. The project will boost economic development, enhance visitor satisfaction, and strengthen the region’s transportation infrastructure for decades to come.
