Estero’s Growing Role in Cutting-Edge Cancer Care

SUSAN KOSCHALK August 22, 2025

The Estero corridor is rapidly emerging as a beacon for some of the most advanced cancer treatments in the world. With the recent opening of Southwest Florida Proton and the newly proposed Curadel Pharma cancer treatment facility, Estero is positioning itself at the forefront of medical innovation.

Southwest Florida Proton, which opened last December on Estero Parkway, has already begun delivering state-of-the-art photon therapy for cancer patients and will begin providing proton therapy this coming December. This advanced form of treatment allows doctors to target tumors with pinpoint accuracy, sparing healthy tissue and reducing side effects.

Not far from there, Curadel Pharma has its sights set on building a 43,000-square-foot cancer treatment facility and headquarters just two miles away on Corkscrew Road. At a recent Estero Planning Zoning and Design Board informational meeting, Curadel presented plans for the facility, which will employ 35 corporate staff members, 30 medical staff, and treat up to 72 patients daily during its first phase.

Curadel, headquartered in Natick, Massachusetts, with a research facility in Bonita Springs, is led by Dr. John Frangioni, a Harvard-trained physician who also resides in Naples. The company is best known for its pioneering work in image-guided surgery using advanced optical imaging systems that help surgeons see cells and tissues in remarkable detail. This innovation reduces risk during critical cancer surgeries.

In addition to surgical imaging, Curadel is advancing a new class of targeted alpha therapy drugs, a revolutionary approach that uses alpha-emitting isotopes to specifically destroy cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue. The company’s lead drug is currently in pivotal global trials and may receive FDA approval as early as next year.

Frangioni noted that Estero is an ideal location because of its proximity to Southwest Florida International Airport and nearby hotels. Patients undergoing treatments would likely remain in the area for several weeks, benefiting both the medical community and local businesses.

While the proposal received initial support, some concerns were raised at the meeting, including potential traffic impacts and flooding. Curadel will be returning with finalized plans, including a traffic study, before approval from both the planning board and village council.

With both Southwest Florida Proton and Curadel Pharma investing in Estero, the community is quickly becoming a destination for patients seeking world-class cancer treatment options. This marks an exciting chapter in the region’s growth, bringing together healthcare innovation, economic development, and improved access to life-saving care.
