Travelers through Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) are in for a treat, as the airport has announced a substantial expansion of dining and retail options scheduled over the next two years. This new lineup is part of the larger Terminal E expansion project, which will add 37,000 square feet of retail space, representing a 54% increase in concession areas since 2022. Carolyn Langdon, the Lee County Port Authority director of concessions, highlighted the phased rollout as a strategic effort to maintain the passenger experience while accommodating these new spaces.
With a carefully curated mix of both national and local brands, these additions are set to enhance the airport’s appeal for both local residents and international travelers, striking a balance that aims to satisfy a broad range of preferences. As Stephen Freibrun, a senior consultant with ICF, explained in a recent workshop, direct negotiations with operators allowed the airport to secure brands that align well with RSW’s evolving identity and its goal of seamless, high-quality service for visitors.
What to Expect in 2024 and Beyond
Starting in 2024, travelers can look forward to several beloved brands opening at RSW. Key Lime Bistro, The Boat House or Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille, Starbucks, Popeyes Chicken, Shula Burger, and Stellar will all make their debut, providing a fresh range of dining experiences for travelers looking for everything from quick bites to leisurely meals. Adding to the excitement, the popular Sanibel Marketplace and the Lego Store opened in December 2023, giving families and casual shoppers a fun new way to pass the time at the airport.
Later, in 2026, the second wave of new additions will roll out, with Coastal Expressions, Ford’s Garage, Gulf Coast Provisions, another Starbucks location, and Air Margaritaville joining the airport’s offerings. Sanibel Market will bring a taste of local culture to travelers, providing fresh options and enhancing the region’s sense of community right within RSW.
The highly anticipated Seaside Mercantile is also scheduled to open in Concourse D in mid-December. This unique retail spot will offer a blend of clothing, deli items, and Norman Love chocolates, making it a one-stop shop for both comfort and indulgence. Additionally, two Great American Bagel locations are currently in the permitting process, planned for Concourse D and Concourse B.
Fort Myers Brewing Co. joined the RSW lineup on November 6, offering a relaxed atmosphere for travelers to enjoy a craft beer before takeoff. Other recent additions include A Day at the Beach gift shop and Relay, providing travel essentials and more of Norman Love’s renowned chocolates.
Enhanced Partnerships and a Tailored Mix of Offerings
Freibrun emphasized that RSW’s strategic approach of direct negotiation with brands has been instrumental in bringing in names that fit seamlessly with RSW’s image and local identity. By opting for direct partnerships rather than an open solicitation process, RSW has secured a variety of high-demand brands while minimizing potential administrative challenges. “We recommend and suggest the best solution for you is a direct negotiation. Because you have the ability to achieve the brands you want,” said Freibrun. This strategy ensures the airport can build strong relationships and continue supporting its unique mix of regional, national, and international offerings.
With approximately 55% of its passengers visiting from out of town, RSW’s new additions are tailored to meet the diverse needs of its patrons, offering a blend of tastes and familiar names. The inclusion of local favorites like Key Lime Bistro and Ford’s Garage further highlights RSW’s commitment to celebrating and showcasing Southwest Florida’s culture.
The Road Ahead for RSW’s Concessions Program
With plans to transform RSW into a vibrant and convenient travel hub, the expansion in Terminal E promises a richer experience for the airport’s increasing number of passengers. By prioritizing a phased approach, RSW will keep passenger disruptions to a minimum while ushering in an era of exciting upgrades.
The airport’s new mix of dining and shopping is set to enhance the traveler experience, offering both comfort and variety as they explore the offerings. Whether it's grabbing a freshly brewed coffee at Starbucks or indulging in the local flavors at Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille, RSW’s latest additions are sure to set a new standard for travel in Southwest Florida.
Stay tuned as these new amenities open their doors, bringing travelers more of what they love while creating an atmosphere that captures the spirit of Southwest Florida.
