Amazon's New Robotics Distribution Center - A Milestone for Innovation, Jobs, and Growth
Amazon is planting a significant flag in Fort Myers with a state-of-the-art robotics distribution facility set to open by 2027. This cutting-edge center will bring groundbreaking technology, over 1,000 jobs, and a record-setting $500 million boost in taxable value to the local economy.
The Highlights
Record-Breaking Investment: Amazon purchased 143.2 acres for $66.5 million—the highest price ever paid for raw land in Lee County.
Massive Facility: Spanning 750,000 square feet, the building will be the largest standalone industrial building in the county’s history.
Job Opportunities: More than 1,000 full-time jobs with an average pay of $22/hour, far exceeding initial projections.
Innovative Design: A “first-mile” robotics distribution center featuring the latest in sorting technology to enhance delivery speed for the southeastern U.S.
Economic Impact
Fort Myers Mayor Kevin Anderson hailed the project, stating, “This new center will greatly serve our growing community, as well as generate high-quality jobs and economic opportunity.”
The facility is expected to transform the local economy with:
A substantial rise in taxable land value, from $10 million to $500 million.
High-quality infrastructure improvements, including new sewer and water connections, a traffic signal, and roadway upgrades funded by Amazon.
Why Fort Myers?
Strategic Location: Proximity to Interstate 75 and major thoroughfares played a key role in Amazon’s decision. According to Justin Thibaut, CEO of LSI Companies, “Large vacant properties like this simply don’t exist in such close proximity to major infrastructure.”
A Future-Focused Facility
While originally planned as a 1.5-million-square-foot complex in 2020, Amazon scaled back its nationwide expansion plans post-COVID-19. Now, with an optimized design, this robotics hub will redefine logistics and delivery capabilities in the region.
What This Means for Fort Myers
New Jobs: High-paying opportunities with benefits will enhance the local workforce.
Increased Revenue: Boosted tax revenue will fund community improvements.
Faster Deliveries: Advanced robotics technology will accelerate delivery speeds for local and regional customers.
Looking Ahead
The arrival of Amazon in Fort Myers is more than just a local win; it’s a signal of the region’s growing prominence as a hub for logistics and innovation. As construction progresses, this facility will not only meet rising consumer demands but also elevate the city’s status on the national stage.
