On October 29, a pivotal community meeting took place, inviting Estero residents to share their ideas for the future of a planned 72-acre recreational and sports complex. Hosted by the Village Councilors, project developers, and planners, the meeting aimed to gather public feedback on the development of the expansive area north and west of Williams Road and Via Coconut. This land, formerly a driving range, is part of a 52-acre plot leased from Estero High School for a term of 99 years, now slated to become a premier, high-end sports and recreation hub for Estero.
The sports complex, set to include amenities like the High 5 development, pickleball courts, 10-pin bowling lanes, and more, represents an exciting new chapter for the community. After the presentation, residents had the opportunity to voice their thoughts, suggestions, and hopes for how this space might best serve the community.
In a speech at the meeting, Mayor Jon McLain highlighted Estero’s ongoing dedication to open space and recreation. Since its incorporation in 2014, Estero has steadily acquired land to prevent commercial overdevelopment, protect natural areas, and provide spaces for community recreation. To date, nearly 200 acres have been purchased for this purpose, including:
62 acres of recreational land northwest of US 41 and Corkscrew Road, part of the Estero River
10 acres near River Oaks to preserve natural spaces
79 acres behind the Post Office on Three Oaks Parkway to support flood management and retention pond installation
20 acres near Via Coconut and Williams Road for the sports and recreation complex
Additionally, the 52-acre plot leased from Estero High School is a part of this broader commitment, and the village’s Parks Master Plan envisions a well-connected network of recreation spaces for all residents to enjoy. Property taxes have also remained steady, maintaining one of the lowest rates in Florida.
The next meeting, scheduled for November 19 at the Estero Community Church, is a crucial opportunity for residents to review the final plans, which will shape the development over the next 3-5 years. Mark your calendar for this important event—your feedback at this early stage ensures that the complex reflects the community’s aspirations. This isn’t just about creating a sports facility; it’s about fostering a unified space where everyone, from young families to older adults, can connect and enjoy the best of what Estero has to offer.
By dedicating just an hour or two to this meeting, you can ensure your voice is heard, your ideas are valued, and your vision becomes part of Estero’s vibrant future. Don’t miss this chance to help build a community space that will benefit Estero’s residents for years to come.
