Wonder Gardens in Bonita Springs has introduced two heartwarming new exhibits as part of its “Renew the Wonder” initiative, welcoming rescued juvenile American alligators and river otters into beautifully designed, naturalistic habitats.
Meet Jessie and James: Home at the Dorothy Guigon Vivarium
Thanks to a generous $25,000 donation from Dorothy Guigon, the Dorothy Guigon Vivarium now provides a safe, immersive home for Jessie and James, two juvenile American alligators. The habitat is crafted to mimic their natural surroundings, complete with a pond, waterfall, sandy areas for digging, plants, and rocks for enrichment. The design prioritizes animal welfare and safe, engaging guest viewing.
Ivy and Mae: The Robert & Deborah Blain Otter Grotto
With the support of a $300,000 gift from Robert and Deborah Blain, Wonder Gardens has unveiled its first-ever otter exhibit, featuring Ivy and Mae, rescued female American river otters from Louisiana. This naturalistic enclosure includes a pool with a waterfall, a dry riverbed layered with stones for texture and activity, and a shaded cave-like overhang for rest. Around the perimeter, non-climbable fencing and a glass viewing panel give visitors an unobstructed view of the otters in action.
The exhibit marks a milestone, bringing mammals back to Wonder Gardens for the first time since its nonprofit management began in 2013.
A Restoration Rooted in Resilience
These exhibits are part of a broader revitalization effort following the devastation of Hurricane Ian. The nonprofit’s renewed public–private partnership with the City of Bonita Springs has been pivotal in launching habitat upgrades and expand its mission-driven offerings.
What’s Next? Phase II & Future Plans
Looking ahead, Wonder Gardens plans to expand the otter grotto to accommodate pups and enhance veterinary support and visitor access, further enriching both guest experience and animal welfare.
Why This Matters
After years devoted to rebuilding, these vibrant new habitats breathe life into the 90-year-old zoological and botanical treasure. By showcasing wildlife that cannot be released into the wild, Wonder Gardens strengthens its educational mission, deepens community engagement, and celebrates South Florida's natural heritage.
